Believe it or not a Sandwich Board sign has two types;
1. Portable, human-held advertising:
This is the original form of a sandwich board. It consists of two flatboards connected at the top by a hinge, creating a triangular shape. The wearer straps the boards onto their body, one in front and one behind, forming a “sandwich” of information.
These signs were historically used for street advertising, with the “sandwich man” walking around to attract attention. While still used occasionally, their popularity has significantly declined.
2. Freestanding A-frame display:
This is the more common form of a sandwich board today. It consists of two flatboards connected at the bottom in an A-frame shape. These signs are typically placed on sidewalks or near business entrances to advertise promotions, specials, or store information.
They are often made of lightweight materials like plastic or wood and can be printed on or have changeable inserts for easy message updates.
In both cases, the name “sandwich board” comes from the fact that information is displayed on both sides, similar to how ingredients are sandwiched between two slices of bread.
